Permanent Consultant– Physiology and Pharmacology
Eliete Bouskela was admitted in 1968 as a Medical Student at the Medical School of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro UFRJ). Throughout her medical studies she worked as a student assistant at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics of UFRJ. Her early interest in Microcirculation Biophysics and Physiology was consolidated after her graduation in 1974, when she went for advanced research training and PhD Thesis work in the US in the Dept. of Physiology, Mayo Foundation, Rochester, MN and Dept. of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Her successful work resulted in several publications and formed the core of her PhD Thesis defended in 1978 at the Institute of Biophysics in Rio. Upon her return to Brazil, she was appointed head of the Department of Physiological Sciences at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She worked abroad in Sweden, University of Lund, as Associate Professor (1987-94) to continue her microcirculation research using the hamster cheek pouch preparation to investigate microcirculatory regulation as influenced by temperature, K channel interactions and endothelium-derived relaxing factors. Back in Rio, she founded at UERJ the Microcirculatory Research Laboratory which became her home base for both basic and clinical research. Her fundamental hypothesis is that microcirculatory disfunction preceeds in time macrovascular disease. This point is examined in all her research in clinical conditions, such as: hemorrhagic and septic shock; hiperglicemia with hiper and hipoinsulinemia; obesity; and intermittent hipoxia. Her clinical research work focus rheumatic disease, cardiometabolic disease (diabetes mellitus, obesity and sleep apnea), intermittent claudication and venous insufficiency. She became a Full Professor of Cardiovascular in 1999 and hás recently been appointed Head of the Clinical Research Unit at Medical Sciences Faculty of UERJ. She is an active organizer and teacher at the graduate programs of her University. She won several prizes and commendations for her scientific activity. She has been elected a full Member of the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil; she is an active member of Scientific Societies in Brazil and abroad, a Member of the Board of Directors of the International Institute for Microcirculation as Latin American Representative; and an Associate Editor of the Microvascular Research, published by Academic Press, EUA. She has published 76 full papers and 11 book chapter in her specialty.
