A PRIVATE BIOTECHNOLOGY COMPANY IN
RIO DE JANEIRO SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY PARK
EXTRACTA was incorporated in 1998 as a private LLC company created by scientists
interested in the relationship between biodiversity and biotechnology. It started activities
in 1999 as a resident company under the umbrella of BIO-RIO Foundation, the private
operator of the BIO-RIO Science Park on the campus of UFRJ – the Federal University
of Rio de Janeiro. EXTRACTA grew to become a full corporation (a “sociedade anônima”)
by year 2000.
EXTRACTA invested circa five million US dollars in its 700m2 of laboratory and related
facilities and has accumulated considerable experience in contract research and technical
services. It has amassed the largest collection of plant extracts, fractions and pure
compounds in Brazil, the EXTRACTA Bank of Chemical Biodiversity. The Company is fully
equipped to perform high throughput screening of its collection against innovative biological
targets. It uses state-of-the-art analytical methods in tandem with bioassays in order to
isolate novel pure compounds of interest to Pharma, Cosmetics, Fragrances, Crop and
Livestock Defense and New Biomaterials.
In June 2004 EXTRACTA became the first Brazilian corporation to receive from the Ministry
of the Environment (CGEN) a Special License to access national biodiversity and to form
a commercial library of extracts and its derivatives, down to pure compounds. This license
makes EXTRACTA an attractive partner for industrial clients who seek to use biodiversity
as a source of innovation of their chemical product pipelines.
EXTRACTA is controlled (close to 90%) by its founders, AVFS Participações e Consultoria
Ltda, a group of Brazilian investors and scientists. The Managing Director of AVFS is also
the Chairman and CEO of EXTRACTA.
